Character Name: Eridan Ampora [name]; caligulasAquarium [IM handle]; Prince of Hope [SGRUB mythological role]
Canon: MS Paint Adventures: Homestuck
Canon Point: After his death; p5437 of Act5 Act2

Personality:
Eridan Ampora is a very troubled troll.

He grew up fascinated by exciting tales of past conquerors and their many intrigues. He wants that kind of life for himself. Full of adventure, romance, and machinations. Full of people fawning over him. Full of the feeling that he actually matters. He models himself after these figures, setting unrealistic grandiose goals for himself and acting over-dramatic as fuck. If he acts important enough, surely someone will buy it--even if it's just himself.

He's exceptionally lonely. He really, really wants to feel like someone gives a fuck about him, whether it's in a red or black quadrant. Unfortunately, his neediness and theatrics drive people away.

He's genuinely very emotional, but he tries to downplay that. He tries to play it cool and keep his overly emotional involvement in everything he does to himself. He does a terrible job. Pretty much the only progress he ever made in that respect was to make his overreactions seem like more of his annoying theatrics than anything sincere. This could be termed the opposite of progress, as it only ever made it harder for people to take him seriously.

He's also very angry. It appears to be a shallow sort of emotion, ready to be called up whenever he feels people aren't making enough of a fuss over him. He likes to talk about how he's going to kill all landdwellers because they litter. Everyone knows he doesn't mean it, which is how he's managed to accumulate so many landdweller friends.

Nobody takes him seriously. He's not sure if they even ought to take him seriously. He knows he's kind of pathetic. He knows no one will care unless he makes them. So he's going to. They will take him seriously and they will regret not doing so sooner. His anger is actually very deeply rooted and all tangled up with his loneliness and lack of self-worth.

Kanaya once speculated that SGRUB assigns its players roles, not that suit them, but that challenge them. Eridan was assigned the element of Hope. That can't possibly be a bad sign.

He's used to being at war with himself.

Growing up, he had two self-assigned jobs: kill all the landdwelling trolls, and help keep Feferi's lusus from killing trolls in general. But she would have started with the landdwelling ones. So maybe a small conflict of interest there.

He has always had a strong interest in magic, but he insists vehemently that it's fake and he knows it's fake and everyone with a brain knows it's fake because it's not real--to the point where, when actual magic is demonstrated to exist, he gets rather upset with the practitioner. And then hounds a friend into finding a way for him to do magic too. Only he insists it isn't magic because magic is fake. His wand is a SCIENCE wand. Rather a bit of internal conflict there.

And perhaps most notably, there's his genocide complex. He insists that he's going to kill all landdwellers, but most of his friends are landdwellers. He buys "doomsday" devices that he really doesn't expect to work. He'd amassed large stores of powerful weaponry, but he'd never used any of it on other trolls outside of FLARPing campaigns before snapping on the meteor. He never stopped feeding Feferi's lusus (though he does insist to himself he only did that to keep Feferi happy). In some ways, his genocidal desires aren't real. He has set himself the goal of killing all those below him in the hemospectrum, but he only really did that because it was a grand sweeping gesture, and because he saw it as a murderous goal his peers and superiors would find acceptable, perhaps even noble. He's never gone out of his way to harm landdwellers. His talk of exterminating them is, pretty much, just talk. But on the other nub, he does have a very real drive to kill. He killed many lusii for Feferi's lusus, orphaning hundreds of young trolls. He attacked the angels on his planet for absolutely no reason--they didn't start as hostiles, they were incredibly hard to kill, and he got no reward for having killed them. Despite angry angels being extremely dangerous and Karkat explaining repeatedly that there was no reason to fight them, he went so far as to actively refuse to visit the other players during the game because no one else would have "stepped forward for angel-killin duties".

He has a weird relationship with the hemospectrum. He doesn't care much about blood color under normal circumstances, outside of occasionally reminding people that his is oh-so-much better than theirs, but he will frequently resort to blood-based insults when someone lower than him pisses him off. Basically, he ignores blood color unless it would be in his favor to take notice of it.

Even Eridan has positive qualities, however. While he is rather stuck up and can be a douche (just putting aside the whole murderous thing for a minute), he's still actually rather friendly. He wants friends. And as long as you treat him well, he'll try to do the same to you.

Likewise, he's pretty loyal. If you're his friend he's going to be yours, no matter what (although if you try to kill him, he will respond in kind). This loyalty can be a double-edged sword of course, as trying to cut ties with him is like trying to remove adhesive residue.

History:
Despite being a seatroll, Eridan never spent much time actually in the water. He grew up in a beached shipwreck with his lusus (guardian), a flying seahorse. His lusus appeared to be very easygoing and not much of an authority figure, as it allowed him to saddle it and ride it around.

He spent several sweeps FLARPing (extreme roleplaying), during which time he formed a rivalry and partnership with Vriska--they would compete during the campaign, but share the spoils after. Aka Vriska fed their opponents to her lusus, and Eridan fed the troll-less lusii to Feferi's. It was during one of these campaigns that they found their ancestor's weapons.

Eridan believed they were kismesises, but either the feelings were never actually as dark as he'd imagined or Vriska got bored of him--she stopped hanging out with him as much. He started ordering doomsday devices from her to try to keep in cahoots. The devices never worked. He began to suspect his ruse hadn't either.

He apparently had some foreknowledge of SGRUB and how it would work (or as Terezi phrased it, he was part of the "conspiracy"). He was certain the game wouldn't provide much of a challenge--at least not to him.

Once he was actually in the game, things began to go downhill. As their world was already destroyed and Feferi felt he was no longer a threat to her people, she pale-dumped him. She had been his flush-crush for a long time, and while moirail was not what he had been aiming for, it had been better than nothing, and he was understandably distressed. Grasping at straws, he finally proposed they try matespritship. Unfortunately, he'd waited so long to get his nerve up that she didn't have the energy to start over with him anymore. She'd spent it all trying to keep him stabilized over the sweeps.

He began pestering Karkat for emotional support, but discovered that Karkat was too upset by Sollux dying to be of any help. Eridan immediately declared that he "felt like an asshole" and stopped trying to bother his friend for help. After all, this wasn't anything he couldn't handle on his own. He was probably just being over-dramatic again. He knew how to reign it in when it actually mattered. Ok, actually he pestered Karkat on one of his memos in a last ditch attempt. Karkat shushed him, insisting memos were not the place for this, but they took the discussion to private messages.

Feferi was able to resurrect Sollux, and the two of them began playing the game together, drawing closer to each other. This pissed Eridan the fuck off. He even left off killing the angels on his planet at one point specifically to duel Sollux. What started as mere jealousy turned into Eridan trying to court the psychic as a kismesis. Sollux was not interested.

Being on his own planet didn't do Eridan any good either, because he kept picking fights with the angels. The angels were never meant to be enemies, and turning them hostile made his planet too dangerous for anyone to visit. This did not help his growing feelings of exclusion.

Finally they beat the black king, won the game, and were about to claim their prize.

Then Jack Noir, the omnipotent antagonist from the humans' session, showed up and tried to kill everyone. They were teleported away just in time.

They all hid on a meteor in the Veil. While there, most of the trolls focused on trying to solve the problem of Jack that was facing them, or else decided to wait fatalistically, or else decided to troll the humans they'd found. Eridan decided instead to get someone, anyone, into one of his quadrants. He tried to stoke the rivalry he had going with Sollux (who continued to not be interested), and also tried to get Kanaya, Feferi and Terezi to be their auspice. If he couldn't fill the black quadrant, he'd fill the ashen one! ...Nobody wanted in on that either. He tried to rekindle his rivalry with Vriska, but she passed.

Finally he found Rose doing her magic thing and decided to call her on her bullshittery because magic is fake fakey fakefake and that's always been a big deal to him for some reason. When she failed to rise to the bait, he tried sounding her out for various quadrants too. He tried to get her to teach him her fake fakey fakefake magic as well. She seemed to be getting annoyed with him, so he finally proposed kismesitude, which, surprise, she didn't go for. She did, however, blow up his computer. So he got some mixed messages on that end.

One thing he was sure about, however, was that he wanted a proper wand too. Like the ones Rose had. The ones that actually could do all the fake fakey fake fake bullshit that they weren't supposed to. He knew Kanaya was on good terms with Rose, so he pestered her to make him a wand. A real one. A SCIENCE wand!

He wouldn't shut up about it, so she did.

Afterwards he decided he didn't want his ancestor's rifle anymore and tried to give it to Jade, whom he assumed was in a rivalry with Rose. Unfortunately he had apparently earlier tried his nub at hitting on Jade too and she didn't want his rifle. It took a lot of cajoling to get her to accept it. And when she did she threw it out with the trash. Eridan grumbled about people going out of their way to disrespect him and decided to stop communicating with the humans. Then he blew up one of her computers. (It turned out to be the one she didn't want anyway, unfortunately for vvengeance.)

When he returned to the computer room, he discovered Kanaya had been on her way out. He thanked her for helping him with the wand, to which she replied sarcastically about hoping he used it for the side of good. He thought she was being sincere and got really confused when she apologized. When he found out about the matriorb, he made her promise to let him help with it, as he had recently decided to rule over any and all projects that seemed "hopeful". Prince of Hope, you know. That is, he would help when he got back.

Because Eridan had decided that they had no hope of beating Jack Noir, and their only chance of survival was to join the woofbeast demon. He offered to let Feferi come with him.

Feferi and Sollux thought his idea was stupid. As his travelling to Jack's location would also tip off the woofbeast as to where the other trolls were, Sollux decided to duel Eridan again and make him stop. Sollux had been able to beat Eridan before, and he had no reason to believe Eridan could beat him now. Sollux thought their duel would be pathetically one-sided, considering Eridan was using one of his shitty wands instead of his ancestor's legendary rifle.

Not only did Solloux lose, he was knocked unconcious and his eyes burned out.

Feferi attacked Eridan in a rage, but he quickly dispatched her. With no psychic powers to shield herself, the SCIENCE blast shot straight through her body, killing her.

Kanaya prepared to take him out herself, but she hesitated when she remembered the matriorb was right next to her, unprotected. In a fit of spite and despair, Eridan blasted it too, shattering it and ensuring the extinction of his own species. Another blast killed the enraged Kanaya.

Feeling more than a little unhinged, Eridan wandered up to the meteor's roof, where he was confronted by Vriska and Gamzee, fresh from their own murderous happenings. They prepared for a showdown.

Unfortunately for Eridan, Kanaya's death had turned her into a troll!vampire. She appeared suddenly, kicked Gamzee off the roof, punched Vriska out of the way, snapped Eridan's wand and then chainsawed him in half.

And that was the end of Eridan.

Abilities:
First off, Eridan is a troll. That makes him stronger and tougher than humans, as well as giving him the ability to regrow his horns and teeth. Also he has horns (ornamental, sadly) and teeth (sharp).

Second of all, he's a sea-troll, so he can breathe underwater.

He's also a highly skilled marksman, and has knowledge of riding.

Moreover, when given the proper conduit (which seems to be a wand he has convinced himself is real), he can channel angelic light/hope into destructive beams of energy.

Strengths: Eccentric, loyal, friendly, intelligent, sincere
Weaknesses: Stubborn, acts aloof, doesn't "get" sarcasm, needy, proud, overly emotional, questionable fashion sense

First Person Sample:
Hello? Is this primitiwe husktop wworkin'? [The troll scowls at the screen for a few moments while he tries to figure this out, but eventually plows ahead.]

I hawe, um. A slightly... odd question. Do... do I look human to ewerybody? Eweryone I'we met so far insists I do, but... Look, if anybody, anybody at all, is lookin' at me, wwonderin' wwho could possibly think I'm human, wwould you get in touch wwith me and let me knoww? I'm startin' to think I'm losin' my mind ower here.

I think I wwon't tell you wwhat I think is different about me. If you can sea the same fin I'm seain', you wwill knoww.

Third Person Sample:
Eridan went for a walk to clear his head. Try to figure a few things out.

He didn't know what to believe. His whole life? Just a dream? It was absurd! ...But a little tempting. There was no Jack Noir, he hadn't killed the girl he was flushed for, he hadn't died. Sollux wasn't reel--no no, real. He needed to stop it with the fish puns. He had always thought them a bit silly when he actually was a fishy alien--er, thought he was a fishy--no. No, that was where things broke down.

He could see he wasn't human. He was very obviously a troll. A troll with some of the richest blood Alternia had to offer! He was royalty! How dare these peasants, these humans, lie to him in this way! Such outrageous lies! Ooo, when he got his hands on a gun... He flexed his hands, trigger finger positively itching.

He almost walked into someone and glared at them angrily. "Look wwhere you're goin', you stupid pissant!" They had the audacity to glare back! Eridan bared his teeth and let out a low growl. They gave him a weird, slightly troubled look, and backed off. He smirked to himself as the other participant of the near-collision carefully stepped around him and continued on their way. At least these humans knew their place. Not like that fraudulent 'witch', the Rose human. Or the Jade human, who had been downright disrespectful.

Of course, actually growling at someone, where they could hear you, was kind of rude. He would have to remember his own place next time. As the sole representative of his species, not to mention the aristocracy, he had to remember not to behave like some sort of wild beast. Royalty was supposed to be civilized, after all.

Then he remembered something else, and his shoulders sank. The humans couldn't see that he was a troll. At least that was what they told him whenever it came up. That... Were they all part of some grand conspiracy? To... what, exactly? Give him a second chance at life? Why would they do that?
